Professional Development: Computer Science and Making
Learningtech.org offers professional development [PD] and consultation for Computer Science [CS] and Making. We have been delivering out-of-school enrichment in these areas for nearly two decades. We have previously provided CS, Robotics, Making, and other offerings at San Mateo County of Education; we have provided Educational Technology PD in the lower ninth ward of post-Katrina New Orleans; we have provided courses from time to time at Foothill College; and we have provided in-class teacher support and curriculum development at schools in coastal San Mateo County for several years. We want to share what we have learned through these years of experience with a broad audience of educators.
Sample topics include:
- Getting Started with Block-based Coding: Code.org, Scratch, Snap!, and MakeCode
- Easing the Transition to Text Coding (Python, Raspberry Pi, JavaScript)
- Integrating Computer Science with Next Generation Science Standards [NGSS]
- Unplugged Activities and Powerful Ideas from Computer Science
- Coding and Making with the BBC micro:bit
We appreciate that every district is unique; and educators each have unique backgrounds and goals. We also realize that isolated professional development as an event does not usually create lasting change. Our subject matter experts will collaborate with your in-house leaders to:
- Establish professional learning communities based on small cohorts
- Design and deliver a series of focused workshop experiences for educators, using a mix of face-to- face and webinar formats, aligned with your needs and budget
- Help teachers create semi-custom lesson plans compliant with both the new CDE CS/CSTA standards and/or Next Generation Science and Common Core Standards where applicable
- Provide in situ support to teachers as they apply what they are learning to classroom delivery
- Preserve and enhance progress through online follow-up sessions, after initial delivery
- Provide ongoing 1-1 consultation as needed
Since funding can be a hurdle, please consider partnering with us to seek grants. Foundations favor proposals demonstrating collaboration between districts and nonprofit service providers.
